Job Description:

Position Purpose: Assist medical providers in providing a high level of quality patient care in addition to performing waived and moderate complexity tests in a clinical laboratory for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease.Performs a variety of duties in accordance with federal, state and local regulations along with established priorities and procedures of the practice.   • Perform routine tests in clinical laboratories for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease using standard techniques and equipment
  • Perform related duties in laboratory to include storing and labeling specimens and using manual and automatic equipment to prepare specimen and perform analytical tests
  • Understand and comply with laboratory Quality and Control and Quality Assurance policies and procedure for instrumentation and testing
  • Maintain records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
  • Prepare solutions, reagents and stains following the standard laboratory formulas and procedures
  • Maintain detailed records of tests performed and report laboratory test results to appropriate personnel; recognize Quality Control shifts and trends to take appropriate action whenever necessary
  • Calibrate and perform routine maintenance on test equipment, clean and sterilize laboratory equipment, glassware and instruments, maintain laboratory supply chemical sand glassware; perform routine maintenance on equipment
  • Follow up on patient lab specimens sent to reference laboratories for results
  • Collect blood specimens from patients using venipuncture, heel stick or finger stick
  • Carry out Point-of-Care Testing waived tests and urinalysis without microscope
  • Utilize CPA and laboratory information systems and software
  • Interact in a professional manner with doctors, mid-level providers, nurses, CMAs, and other personnel to provide technical guidance and address concerns
  • Receive accurate information on all patients and update all demographic fields required
  • Escort patients to exam rooms, interviews patients, measure vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and document all information in patient's chart
  • Instructs patients about medications and special diets as instructed by the medical provider
  • Explains treatment procedures to patients
  • Prepares patients for examination
  • Assists the physician during patient exams
  • Keep exam rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments, prepare sterilization as required
  • Prepares and administers medications as directed by the physician
  • Administers vaccines with proper technique, according to the current vaccine schedule
  • Maintains a working knowledge of current vaccine schedule and any changes that incur annually to this schedule
  • Administers medications with accurate calculations, obtaining a witness when needed
  • Removes sutures and changes dressings
  • Maintain all logs and required checks in accordance with assigned duties. (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid change, etc.)
  • Triage and process messages from patients and front office staff to medical providers
  • Sets up IV administration and performing venipuncture, finger/heel sticks, and urethral catheterization, along with other minor, in office procedures as educated
  • Receive accurate information on all patients and update all demographic fields required
  • Organizes, plans, and manages time effectively
  • Completes all mandatory training as required
  • Attends staff meetings as required
  • Meets position requirements and performs essential functions

          • High school diploma or equivalent.
          • Prior medical practice experience preferred.
          • Certification/Registration in medical assisting from an accredited source preferred
          • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
          • Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling preferred
          • Working knowledge of computer applications. Prior experience with EMR preferred.
          • Ability to speak, read and write effectively.
          • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
          • Ability to coordinate, analyze, observe, make decisions, and meet deadlines, in a detail-oriented manner.
          • Ability to work weekdays, evenings, and weekends. Physical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Must have good visual acuity and ability to verbally communicate. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The ability to lift, lower, push, pull and retrieve objects weighing a minimum 5 lbs. frequently.Work Environment:
            • Indoor, temperature controlled, smoke free environment. Occasional outdoor exposure.
            • Exposure or potential exposure to blood and bodily fluids may be required.
